How to choose backpacking tents

Capacity

Advertised capacity is snug. Two adults are much happier in a 3-person tent, and solo hikers often prefer a 2-person.

Weight

Under 4 lb for a 2–3 person tent is excellent. Tents over 5 lb are fine for short trips and car camping.

Freestanding or not

Freestanding tents pitch anywhere, even on rock. Semi-freestanding designs save weight but need stakes.

Doors and vestibules

Two doors mean no crawling over your partner. Bigger vestibules keep boots and packs dry.

Ventilation and floor

More mesh means less condensation but less warmth. Thin floors save weight; add a footprint for rough ground.

FAQ

What’s a good weight for a backpacking tent?

About 2–3 lb per person is a comfortable target. Ultralight tents go lower but trade off durability or space.

Do I need a footprint?

With thin, light floors, a footprint (or a cheap sheet of polycryo) adds a lot of life to the tent.
